Your Final Essay combines revised, edited and improved versions of the following assignments:
1. Origins
2. Two Turning Points
3. Decision to go to war
4. Obama's War
5. Conclusion

Add segues to connect each part of your essay and make it flow.
Write a conclusion.

Since each assignment was 1.5 to 2 pages, your final essay, combining four assignments should be around six pages long.

Two Turning Points: 
Choose two events or developments from your timeline (between your origins and the outbreak of the most recent war) and go into depth describing what happened, who was involved, why it was significant and how it helps to explain the background of the most recent wars.

1.5 - 2 pages.


Tue Tuesday, May 6
Finish in-class writing on the origins/historical background of the war. Min: 1.5 to 2 pages. Write on one or more of the following prompts:

1.Describe the history of the Baath party or the Soviet occupation and war.
2. How did life change in this period for Afghans/Iraqis?
3. How did this period shapr relations/attitudes toward the US? Toward the Soviet Union?
4. How did the Cold War shape the history of Iraq/Afghanistan?
     How did natural resources, economic factors, and views of Israel/Palestine shape your country's history?


Due Thursday, May 1:

Read one of the following articles.
Take 1 pg. notes and summarize the Cold War roots of the Afghan war or the history of the Baath Party (depending on which is your topic).

Read either p. 1021 - 1033 in America (pages 1330-1347 in new book)
Or read p. 469 - 481 in A People's History

Take 1-2 pages of detailed notes on reading. 

A People's History deals with the origins of the war through the American bombing campaign and the massacre at My Lai.

America examines Johnson's Great Society, Black Power, and offers a critical analysis of Johnson's administration in Vietnam through 1968.

On Tuesday, we will share with each other from our respective books. Be prepared to explain key topics in your reading to peers.
